5th Floor Auditorium Renovation
Chicago, IL
University of Illinois at Chicago : College of Medicine
The existing autopsy auditorium had been dormant for 30 years. The University had hoped to create two separate floors in the same footprint. The new facilities include an accessible sloped auditorium type classroom on the upper floor and offices with a kitchenette below.
design solutions:
A new, lightweight concrete slab was introduced to create the vertically separated spaces.
Existing exterior windows are to maintain their exterior appearance while providing new, thermal protection. There is spandrel glass where the new slab meets the windows and this connection must maintain a fire rating separation between floors.
AV considerations include an av closet, recessed ceiling mounted projector and recessed electronic shades and video screen.
